Young people and families

Eden Psychological Services is currently telehealth only. Telehealth may be available for suitable clients throughout Victoria, generally aged 12 and over, after individual suitability, privacy and safety review. Eden may work with children from age 8 and adolescents, subject to individual suitability. Therapy is adapted to the young person’s developmental stage, communication style, interests, strengths and goals.

Concerns that may be supported

Anxiety, worry, avoidance, low mood, adjustment, trauma-related difficulties, emotional regulation, behavioural concerns, stress, perfectionism, neurodivergence-related needs and burnout may be considered. This does not guarantee that Eden is the right fit.

Consent and parental responsibility

Authority and consent arrangements are clarified at the outset. The relevant parent or guardian involvement depends on legal responsibility, the young person’s circumstances, age, capacity and the nature of the proposed care. Both parents do not automatically need to consent in every situation; any uncertainty is addressed before treatment begins.

Parent and guardian involvement

For younger clients, parents or guardians may contribute to assessment, goals, progress reviews and support between sessions where clinically appropriate. The amount of involvement varies with age, maturity, consent, family circumstances and clinical needs. Parent participation in a young person’s treatment is not family therapy.

Privacy and information sharing

Young people are involved in decisions about their care in line with their developing capacity. Matthew discusses what may remain private, what may be shared with parents or guardians, and when information may need to be disclosed because of safety, legal obligations or funding requirements. The young person’s developing capacity and any mature-minor considerations are assessed case by case. Payment for appointments does not automatically give a parent or guardian unrestricted access to clinical information.

Can a young person make their own enquiry?

Young people may contact the practice themselves. Guardian authority, consent, capacity and suitability are clarified before an appointment is accepted.

Neurodivergence

Therapy may be adapted for autistic young people, young people with ADHD and others who identify as neurodivergent. This is a therapy service and does not provide formal autism, ADHD or cognitive assessment or diagnosis.

Communication with other people

With specific consent, or where otherwise required or authorised, Matthew may communicate with a GP, allied health practitioner, community service or other relevant support. The purpose and limits of information sharing are discussed.

Therapy materials and activities are selected to suit the young person’s developmental stage, communication style and treatment goals.
